Natural Remedy For UTIs
April 26, 2007 |
When it comes to a natural remedy, cranberries can be consumed to fight against Urinary tract infections. also known as UTIs. UTIs are a very common, widespread bacterial infection.
There are 3 categories of UTIs. They include: (1.) urethritis (2.) cystitis and (3.) pyelonephritis. While cranberry juice is a natural remedy that can help a patient with their UTI, it cannot help if you have urethritis. This is because this is a type of viral infection and cranberry juice is a natural remedy that can only help with bacterial UTIs.
E. coli (Escherichia coli) causes both the cystitis and the pyelonephritis type of UTI. Hence, you can use cranberry juice to help fight E.coli infections.
Cystitis is the most common type of UTI. It is accompanied with pain or discomfort in the abdominal region and the lower back near the kidneys. There is also a frequent urge to urinate.
Pyelonephritis is the most serious UTI. It begins as a type of infection in the bladder. If it is left untreated it can spread to your kidneys and cause damage. Some of the symptoms of this type of a UTI include nausea, severe pain in the lower back, chills and a fever.
Researchers found that cranberries contain a chemical known as hippuric acid. This chemical helps to prevent the bacteria that find their way into the bladder from attaching themselves to the walls of the bladder and then multiplying.
So consume more cranberries as a natural remedy for UTIs
Additionally, cranberry juice has high levels of benzoic acid in it. This chemical is believed to have the unique ability to inhibit the E. coli bacteria from affixing itself to the bladder’s walls and individual cells. This natural remedy is also available in cranberry capsules.
